Furniture Refinishing Advice

So - all of you Payne men who know about furniture, tools and fixing stuff -
My dining room table's finish is gone. The clear stuff on top that protects from markers, crayons and stains is gone. The top is not shiny anymore, it's flat. So I need to put some clear polyurathane (sp?) or something on it.

How do I go about doing this? So I need to sand it?
Can I change the color of the table? I'd like it to be darker.

I've already thought about just covering it with a vinyl table cloth because that would be easiest.
I've already thought about begging dad to come help me, but he's going to be too busy to come down here.

So what should I do with it?

I know, I know. The purpose of listing packages here was so he wouldn't get 5 at a time. But, he called me this week and wanted me to get an organizer for him and I did, so I'm sending one this week too. I am sending him:

Bleach in a Cup - Falsely Accused!

I just read a blog my friend wrote about how a cleaning cup (with toxins in it) became a drinking cup. It reminded me of the time when mom drank from a cup on the back of the sink, which had not water but BLEACH in it. Because I happened to be washing the dishes at the time, I got BLAMED for it. Now, I felt really bad about what had happened but I hadn't touched the bleach! I didn't even remember pouring bleach or even looking at bleach! What would I use bleach for? And then to make it worse, later on I heard mom talking to one of her firends on the phone about how "amy poured bleach in a cup and let me drink it." So I want to clear my good name!! I want to know who put bleach in the cup! -- Adam, Tom and Melissa are not suspects as they were to young to have planned and executed such an evil plan!

-- Oh, and by the way, Melissa I'm sorry we told you that we found you in the sewer and you stank so bad no one wanted you so we gave you a tomato bath and then decided to keep you. Hopefully by now you know we were just being mean siblings....and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were BIG.

Package to Adam from MD

We are mailing out a package to Adam today....or early tomorrow. The kids are working on their art projects for it. The paint is still drying on the one from this morning.

Grandma called me yesterday and said she was going to send Adam a package this week. She said she was including the following:

Hunny Buns(?)
trail mix
beef jerky
wet ones
a few packages of hot cocoa mix
individual drink mixes
I'm sure there were some other things, but you get the picture.

Packages to Major Payne

There has been a request that we list when we are sending packages to Adam and what we are sending him. I think this is a good idea. It will help spread the packages out, and hopefully eliminate 37 packages of Oreos all at one time. So, I sent a package to him on October 30th. It contained granola bars, single serve packets of cookies, cheese its, and gold fish. I think there were some fruit snack bags too.
